Bonds are a common method to secure financing for both publicly and privately held companies. In a developed market economy a company in need of capital issues bonds, which markets price according to the performance of the company and that of the world economy. The choice is often whether to issue bonds with long maturity, or whether to issue shorter period bonds and roll them.
Under usual conditions shorter maturity implies lower interest rate. However the relationship between maturity and interest rate can vary significantly. It is not at all uncommon for yield curve to flip, meaning that bonds with shorter maturity may have higher interest rate than those with a longer one. This is the reason why choosing the right bond portfolio may be a nontrivial task.
With the help of financial mathematics we can estimate regularities in interest rate behavior and optimize the mix of bonds with various maturities. This may lead to lower costs.
